While i think about it and before I forget

You already know that this blog is pretty much the journal of my life, in addition to being several other things. I am so distracted and all over the place these days (lovingly known as headless-chicken mode) that I need to write things down more often if I’m going to remember. So here goes.

My sweet fam, January 08.

THIS is the good stuff. Not some imagined future or faraway past, but this. Right now. Rowen, pausing on her way to preschool to show me the Red Hat that has appeared in at least 100 photos. And Elliott, in his favorite spot in the whole world.

Or This…

Jared walking in to Rowen’s room to tuck her in last night.

She is dancing in the middle of her floor wearing her new sunglasses. And a t-shirt. And a pair of tights.

“Daddy! I’m a rockstar!”

Or This…

A couple weeks ago, Jared turned around in his chair and said, “I heard a song on the radio that reminded me of you today. Want to hear it?” He listens to the NC State college radio station on his way to and from work, and that’s where he heard the Avett Brothers.

Of course I would. One thing I’ve learned in almost 8 years is that Jared is not a man of many words, so he uses music to say the things he doesn’t say.

Of course I love it. The spare vocals are so beautiful, and it feels like the song he would sing to me, if singing and songwriting were his thing. It’s called If It’s the Beaches, and it’s here on itunes. So it has become our new song. We played it for each other a few times last night, and I need to remember it. :)

My favorite part is the chorus, which says:

If it’s the beaches
If it’s the beaches’ sands you want
Then you will have them.
If it’s the mountains’ bending rivers
Then you will have them.
If it’s the wish to run away
Then I will grant it.
Take whatever you think of
While I go gas up the truck.
Pack the old love letters up
We will read them when we forget why we left here.

You can also catch a couple of live recordings on YouTube, to get the general flavor of the song.  Here’s one, not the best recording ever, but at least it’s the whole song. :)

Or This…

An amazing article on portraits, from Bill Wadman, the man who brought us the incredible 365 portraits last year. This just makes me want to take pictures forever.

Or This…

I’ve added two new sections to the left menu. One for quotes, which will be filled as I go along (again with the needing to write down and remember), and another with books and book lists. I especially love the list of the world’s 500 greatest books. Check them out if you like.
